A merger is used to combine your company or corporation with another entity.  Mergers are also used to change the domicile of a company or corporation wishing to move across state lines.

Now, let's say you have a corporation but would rather run your business as a limited liability company or "L.L.C."  In the past, your corporation would have to undergo a merger to change its form of doing business. 

Today conversions are much simpler and less expensive because of conversion statutes.
