FAQ 7. Should a lawyer write my business plan?

I would argue that a lawyer should definitely not write your business plan. Lawyers may be great at a lot of things and their assistance may be invaluable in start up planning or even drafting certain part of a business plan centering around legal risk or business entity organization, but the majority of your plan will touch on areas with which many attorneys have only passing familiarity and little understanding of your personal goals and concepts.

Generally, I advise new business owners who are worried about their ability to write a great plan to identify and consult with a business mentor you trust or with any number of organizations with the understanding and expertise to guide their efforts. Namely, organizations such as SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) or your local Small Business Administration have the resources you need to commemorate your killer plan.
